These teams met in the Connacht League final three weeks ago where Ballina scraped victory with two late tries and it was equally tight in Galway on Sunday morning when the Moy boys battled through to the cup semi-final.
Ballina came out of the starting blocks strongly and were unlucky to be denied a try with a foot in touch after just four minutes. However the pack drove on and scored a try in the right-hand corner courtesy of Fiacha Barrett. Moments later, Iarla Quinn had to leave the field with a damaged wrist but he was ably replaced by Mark Barrett.
Corinthians then drove at the Ballina line and were consistently knocked back by a resilient Ballina defence.
The Ballina front row which consisted of Hedd Morgan, Darragh Walsh and Patrick Morrin tackled any threats around the rucks. The Ballina captain, Ciaran Boland and Alex Hennigan won numerous turnovers at ruck time. Harry Regan was also putting himself about.
A sweeping move by Corinthians up the left wing resulted in a try for their winger to leave the half time score 5-5.
Corinthians started the second half strongly and within three minutes moved in front 8-5 with a well-struck penalty. The home side then went looking for the killer score, but Ballina stood strong under the relentless pressure and refused to yield a score.
Jack Gawley was now dominating the game in the lineouts and at ruck time.
Ballina won a penalty just inside the Corinthians half which they moved at pace with fine passes from David Feeney, Ciaran Boland and Harry West, with the final pass to Sam Callinan and he strode past the Corinthians defence to score under the posts. Harry West converted to leave the score 8-12.
However, this match was far from over. Corinthians came at Ballina with renewed purpose for the final 15 minutes, but superb tackling from John Ginty and a try-saving tackle from Liam Golden kept them out.
Seamus Mason showed some tremendous pace from fullback and was unlucky not to cross the Corinthians line.
The final few minutes of this match were heart-stopping for the Ballina supporters. The maturity showed by the Ballina boys was hugely impressive. They defended their try line from several attacks and were forced to concede numerous penalties.
A tremendous roar rang out when the referee finally blew his whistle and they can now look forward to the semi-final in four weeks’ time.
