On a stunning spring day Ballina U14s cruised past Castlebar to book a place in the cup semi-final.
The visitors arrived with a spring in their step as they had run Ballina to a 10-5 scoreline before christmas in the league, so the Moy boys knew that they had to bring their A game to the table.
From the kick off the home side received and sped into action scoring within the first minute, but Castlebar were having none of it and from the kick off drove into the game like men possessed forcing Ballina to give away a penalty, which they drove up the field knocking players left and right to score under the post for a 7-7 scoreline.
Ballina knew they were in a game, so with renewed fervour the played their way up the field and scored a converted try, but Castlebar were not lying down and returned the favour and scored 14-14.
So Ballina adjusted their game and scored twice more before the break to give themselves breathing space at the interval.
After the break the home side kept up the pressure, winning all the lineouts, winning a scrum against the head, disrupting the opposition’s scrum, fighting for every scrap, attacking at every opportunity, tackling all across the park and driving any Castlebar attacks backwards while also scoring four more tries.
All of the panel got game time and all the players set to the task with as much skill and determination as the players they replaced.
