On a day when Celtic won the Glasgow derby, an excellent first half from Ballina secured the crucial league points in this Mayo derby on Moyside.
An early try by Niall Brennan, converted by Andy Moynihan set the tone. The lead was extended soon after when Andrew Ruane got over.
Joe Sweeney was pulled down just short of the line and Ruane pounced over the ruck to score and Moynihan converted for a 14-0 lead.
Ballyhaunis hit back to half the deficit, but the score of the game arrived after 30 minutes when debutant tighthead prop Brian Boland sprinted away from a ruck on the far left to score in the corner. - again converted by Moynihan for a 21-7 lead at halftime.
The second half was very scrappy and Ballyhaunis scored at final whistle to close the gap to seven but Ballina were never really in bother and secured a well-deserved and important victory.
