November 1993

It was a particularly busy weekend for Ballina Rugby Club with the three adult teams in action, 130 boys competing in and retaining the Langan Shield competition against Galway Corinthians, and the Under-18s and Under-20s also playing.

CITY OF DERRY 31 BALLINA 14
Ballina seniors made the long journey to City of Derry on Saturday, where they were beaten 31-14 by a terrific, strong running Derry backline.
Ballina started in impressive fashion, but they missed three penalties and then Derry in a series of breakaways and well executed moves scored four tries, two of which were converted to give them a 24-nil interval lead.
Ballina got their act together in the second half and played some powerful rugby in the pack. Team captain, Martin Byrne got in for a try which William Ruane converted, and David Brady raced around the posts for a second try, to which he added the points to leave it 24-14.
Ballina kept up the pressure and substitute scrum-half. Kevin Casey obviously touched down for a try under the posts, but the referee was unsighted and disallowed what would have been a 24-21 margin for the visitors.
Derry broke away again and scored a try which they converted.
Again it was a stern test for Ballina as they increase their preparation for the All-Ireland League tilt against Old Belvedere in Ballina on Saturday two weeks, November 20th.
They travel to Dublin on Saturday for a senior fixture with Old Wesley and again on the following Saturday for a match with DLSP.
The Derry club extended gracious hospitality at thir new clubhouse off the Limavaddy Road, a short distance from the atrocity on Saturday night.

Ballina Under-20s hosted Wanderers from Dublin.
This was rugby at its best with Ballina leading 7-6 at the interval. There was some rousing play as both sides were fully committed. Wanderers just pipped Ballina with two late penalties in a match which will be remembered for its wholehearted endeavour.
Michael Honan scored both Ballina's tries, one of which Michael Sheehan converted and also kicked a penalty. There was a Ballina connection on the Wanders side . . . Karl Birney being son of the former Anne Diamond, Ballina.
