Alan and Gerry to be honoured by the IRFU

OUR President, Mr Ed Gunning and the entire membership of Ballina RFC are extremely happy to announce that two of our own will be honoured by the Irish Rugby Football Union.

As part of the IRFU’s 150th anniversary celebrations, 100 outstanding volunteers will be recognised for their incredible contributions to rugby across Ireland. This initiative honours those whose dedication and passion have shaped the game over generations — and we are proud to say that two of our own have been chosen for this prestigious award.

Gerry O'Donnell (RIP) and our current Chairman, Alan Rowe, will be honoured with special recognition medals in May 2025. This is a moment of immense pride for our club and the entire North West rugby community. On a side note we are the only club with two legends of the game being recognised.

This is fitting recognition of the drive, energy and selfless dedication both Gerry and Alan have shown to the development of the game and the nurturing and support of players, officials, coaches and everyone involved in our wonderful club.

Gerry’s legacy continues to resonate with all who knew him. His work laid the foundations that still support the game today.
Alan’s tireless commitment and leadership are a shining example of what makes our club so special — his contribution to rugby in the region is both inspiring and deeply appreciated.

While rugby is, of course, about the players on the pitch, none of it would be possible without the tireless work of volunteers past and present. This recognition is a reminder of the lasting impact of those who give so much of themselves for the love of the game.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate this achievement and the values it represents — community, commitment, and love for the game.
