Castlebar was firm in the grip of a "price war" last week-end, following the opening of a new £75,000 superstore, Bests Ltd. on the town's Main Street on Friday morning.
The thousands of shoppers who travelled to avail of the reductions in all departments on the opening day, were surprised to find that many stores in town had also slashed their prices.
The official opening of the store, built by three Ballina businessmen, Mr. Jonn Rowe, Mr. Brian Moylett, and Mr. Seamus Bairett, was performed by glamorous television star, pop singer, Deirdre Wynne.

Among those present were Mr Martin J. McGrath, Chairman, Mayo County Council, Mr. Des Shanley Director, Powers Supermarkets, and members of the directors families.
