The men who helped build the foundation of Ballina RFC

The 1930/31 squad

Today, we feature the famous men who filled the Ballina RFC jerseys in the 1930/31 season. The club had been founded in 1928 and immediately made its mark, competing strongly in provincial competition.
The early years of the club saw the team line out in sky blue and white hoops, the colours of Blackrock College, as many of the players attended there.
The men in the picture are - Standing L to R: Mellet, Cosgrove, Cosgrove, Bannerton, Campbell, Adair, O'Connor. Sitting L to R; Murphy, Floyd, Hutchinson, English, Carlos, Ahern. Front: McCauley, Sherry.
There are many famous names among those listed, none more so that Eddie Murphy (sitting extreme left). His family have had a long association with the club to this very day. Also featured is Mick Sherry from Foxford (sitting, right). His grandson, also Mick Sherry, went on to wear the green of Ireland on the international stage.
We're very aware of our history here in Ballina RFC and know the huge debt of gratitude to these men and all who have gone before us.
