The day Ballina RFC played first-ever game

A day when history was made

THIS DAY

ON THIS DAY 98 YEARS AGO Ballina RFC played our first-ever game.
Our fine young men travelled to Sligo to play the local team, which has the reputation of being a strong one. The play was of a fast order, and in a loose forward rush Foley opened the scoring for Ballina with a try which was not converted.
Change of ends saw Ballina leading by three points but this advantage did not last long as, on resumption, Sligo attacked with renewed vigour and Flanagan scored a try near the posts. Walsh failed to cenvert and despite determined play on both sides the match remained a draw at the final whistle. Outstanding in the play for Ballina were Foley and Murphy and for Sligo, Glenn, Murphy and Flanagan.
After the match and enjoyable dinner was given and a dance took place at Cafe Cairo.

Preparations to celebrate our Centenary in October 2027 are ongoing.
