Remembering a legend of Ballina Rugby Club

In the midst of the St Stephen's Day celebrations on Thursday, a plaque was unveiled at the club which pays tribute to the late, great Gerry O'Donnell.
Gerry made an unquantifiable impact of Ballina RFC and all fortunate enough to spend time in his presence. His energy and drive coursed through the very veins of the club and helped make it the wonderful entity it is today.
His death in July 2023 left a huge void and his name will be forever recalled with great pride whenever Ballina RFC is mentioned.
On Thursday, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the clubhouse wall outside the dressingrooms where it will remain forever more.
Connacht Rugby CEO Willie Ruane performed the unveiling in the presence of Ballina RFC President, Daragh Quinn and Chairman, Alan Rowe.
Willie captured the significance of the moment by tying the entire history of the club together in one sentence. "We're here in Heffernan Park, remembering Gerry O'Donnell and playing for the Aubrey Bourke Cup." Those words recalled three men who have inscribed their names in the annals of Ballina RFC - Gerry, Aubrey and Ivan Heffernan Snr.
Willie told the large attendance that Gerry got him involved in rugby and continued to mentor, drive and encourage him all through his career. He spoke about Gerry's ability to influence and his boundless energy, which set him apart.
Willie then unveiled the plaque which is inscribed as follows; Heroes get remembered but legends never die. In memory of Gerry O'Donnell.
