On a breezy spring day packed with rain, hail and sunshine, our U-17 Boys took to the pitch in Heffernan Park to face a strong Ballinasloe side. With the team losing players to injury and other commitments they relied on a number of U-16s to cover various positions.
Ballina started brightly and had ball in hand for the first 10 mins but failed to capitalise on their possession. Ballinasloe then took over and drove at the Ballina line time and time again, but the resolute home defence held strong.
The Moysiders dominated each scrum and fared very well in the lineouts. For the last 10 minutes of the half either team could have taken control but the jackles and tackles by the Moy Boys began to make a significant impact.
In truth, either team could have taken the lead in the opening 30 minutes, but the deadlock was finally broken when Ballina's Jack Heffernan spotted a gap and ran in the first try of the game. Shortly afterwards the whistle was blown for half time.
The half time talk was short and sweet - “run straight lines, get the ball wide and make the tackles.” The home side responded and within ten minutes twories were run in. That set the trend and in the end, Ballina ran in seven tries for a 41-0 victory.
This was a total performance from all 21 players, but special mention must go to Harry Munnelly who scored his first competitive try for Ballina, and secondly a huge thankyou to the U-16s who contributed hugely.
