Off and running

Ballina U15s went in search of redemption in their first outing of the season on Saturday. They had tasted defeat at the hands of Castlebar last season, a team with great talent and ability.
Ballina had trained hard all summer and were well ready for battle.

The Moy boys were captained by Darragh Hopkins and went into the game full of determination. However, they were well aware of Castlebar's strength and knew, if given the chance, the home boys were grind them down.
Cameron Clotworthy was referee, which allowed Alistair Brown the opportunity to watch as a coach and parent.
Luke Feeney was prominent early and Joe Gill and Oran Canavan were eager half backs. They moved the ball smartly and it wasn't long before Luca Duggan was over for a try.
Ballina kept the savage pace going after the restart with strong carries from Calum Green and Conor Brown backed up by Jack Murphy.

The ball was quickly whipped wide and it paid dividends when Ronan Gallagher touched down. Feeney kicked the conversion and the guests were 12-0 clear.
Straight from the resumption, Castlebar went hunting for scores and were rewarded when their big pack drove up the middle of the pitch before a simple pick and go, yielded a converted try.
The contest was certainly on at that stage and Ballina were soon doing what they do best, shipping the ball to their backs and Luca Duggan was soon racing in under the posts for Feeney to make it 19-7.
The rest of the half ebbed and flowed before a late Castlebar penalty closed the gap to nine, 19-10 at the interval.
Ballina introduced a few substitutes for the second period with both Adam Ford and Eamonn Doherty looking to prove they were worth a starting spot. Both of them put in some big plays and soon the ball was swung out again for Peter Barrett to score a fine team try after great forward play from Lorcan Hughes.
The conversion from a difficult angle was good and Ballina were 26-10 clear.
Both sides added a penalty each before the end as Ballina started the season as they mean to go on.
Now, all thoughts turn to the next game on the weekend after next.
